Rugby kit donation to the Maun Puppies
In May 2018 we received a generous donation of rugby kits for the Maun Puppies Rugby Club from Jo Welsh.
The Maun Puppies Rugby Club started in 2012 with only a handful of boys learning to play tag rugby. The club has evolved to nearly 100 boys (and a couple of girls!) between the ages of 8 and 15, from nine different Maun schools. The club is an affiliate of the Botswana Rugby Union, the only junior rugby club in Botswana with this affiliation. They assist and develop children from many different backgrounds within Maun – approximately 80% are local Motswana children that attend government schools – and these children had no previous exposure to rugby yet show an incredible talent and enthusiasm for the sport. The club relies on a lot of fundraising as a good percentage of the children are non-fee paying, hence donations such as the rugby kit go a long way to support the longevity of the club.
The Maun Puppies Rugby Club is open to all students in the Maun region and many of the club members are non-paying members and are unable to afford proper rugby kit. It was fantastic to be able to give out this generous donations to these children and to see their absolute delight and excitement.
